Established in 1865 as a military fort, Fort Selden housed both U.S. Infantry and Cavalry, who were there to protect settlers from the threats of Apache Indians and desperadoes. It was decommissioned in 1891 as the perceived threat in the area lessened. Located near the scenic Leasburg Dam State Park in Radium Springs, the monument is 13 miles northwest of Las Cruces. The monument's visitors center has exhibits on frontier and military life in the 19th century and often offers living history demonstrations during summer weekends.
Open Wed. - Mon. 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Adults $3; Children under 17 are free.
